One of the first questions we got when we talked to our children about traveling full time in an RV was, what about my piano? After years of music lessons she became quite attached to her piano. Unfortunately it is not really practical to travel with a piano. They can’t fit in many RVs, they are heavy, and they would constantly be out of tune from all the bumps going down the road. The best solution is to have a keyboard.
You can find a keyboard for any price range or ability. There are small, child sized ones that would fit most anywhere. Large ones with a full set of weighted keys for more advanced players. You can have one with a stand or without.
We have tried a couple things with ours during our years on the road. When we were in a travel trailer there was a large drawer under the couch. This was great storage for the keyboard and the music books and headphones. We moved into a fifth wheel that had a lot more space and for some reason the keyboard ended up stuffed in a corner.
You know how much instruments get played when they are out of sight, right? Yep, you guessed it, it became a dust collector in the corner. It only came out when we were parked with other musical friends. The kids would dig it out and set it up outside to play with friends. It wasn’t getting used regularly and they weren’t improving their skills. We needed to make a change.
We changed things around in the kid’s space and the keyboard got its own shelf. Now I’m hearing music in the house again. No more out of sight out of mind. They can see it, so it gets played.
Most of the children in our family have had some music lessons. We have kids of all musical abilities. Some are really talented and love playing, others have no interest and their ability matches their desire. The parents, on the other hand, have no musical talent whatsoever.
That is one reason that home or roadschooling is so great. The parent is not the only teacher. If that were the case, our children would be limited. Luckily, todays world is so full of technology. There are a ton of ways kids can learn music on the road. Youtube has a husge assortment of free and paid music lessons. There are music teachers that will do skype type lessons, or you may travel with someone that is willing to teach.
A keyboard is great for learning music while traveling because they aren’t too big or heavy and are portable. So while I haven’t seen anyone yet traveling with a piano, many people find a way to make keyboards work for their family.
Hi there! My husband and I are making plans now to purchase a Class A motorhome that we will live in full-time. I’m a piano teacher, so I’m researching how to install a Clavinova digital keyboard into the RV … probably in place of one of the sofa units.
I’d love any advice that you’d have!
