Protection for the Fummins

Diesel trucks from the factory typically come with a 7 micron or higher OEM fuel filter that is only about 60% efficient. That’s right, 60% efficient! The injector manufactures for these engines recommend at least 4 micron or better!

This along with increasingly bad fuel, and poorly designed fuel delivery systems on some brands is why they are notorious for taking out the injectors. In fact, OEM injectors are typically on backorder due to so many being sold worldwide. According to an in-depth research study conducted by CAT, the 7 micron particle has been shown to be the main cause of accelerated pump and injector wear in the Common Rails producing upwards of 26,000psi.

These 7 micron particles blasting through your injectors at that kind of pressure result in premature failure which can cost upwards of $3,000-$4,000 in repair bills. CAT fuel filters are made to the highest level of quality in a factory, specifically designed to produce ‘zero tolerance’ filters. CAT built this factory that completely manufactures the filter without a human being touching it, because filter manufacturing can be very tedious and boring, which results in human error.

The results of this factory process are a true, 2 micron fuel filter removing 2 micron and larger particles with over 98% efficiency. Do your own research on these CAT filters. For the money and the nationwide availability, you will be pressed to find a better filter out there.

This past fall, we had an injector fail, and replaced them all.  Luckily I work in an industry that I was able to get the replacements at a more reasonable price, it was still an expensive fix.

This week I took the time, and installed the CAT brand 2 micron filters.  It was long over due, since these have been sitting on my desk for a few months.

On the road you are forced to buy fuel from many different sources, and I wanted to provide as much protection as possible.  Since there isn’t a “premade” kit available for the Excursion, I bought the filter housings and the necessary fittings, and made my own kit.

About Fummins Family

In 2016 a family hit the road with 5 of their children. They were going to travel the country in a Ford Excursion that had a cummins engine. A ford with a cummins, hence the name, Fummins. Ford+Cummins=Fummins. It was going to be a fummins family roadtrip. Within 3 months they decided that the travel trailer they were pulling wasn't working well for their family. They needed more space so they upgraded to a fifth wheel. It's not easy to pull a fifth wheel with an excursion, so they had to bid farewell to the fummins. They talked about changing the name of theirs travels, but decided to hold onto it for a while longer. They already had a website, blog, youtube, instagram and facebook. After 2 more years they decided to make the switch to Roadschool. Here they will share some of the old posts and video. It may be old information, but it's still just as good...at least most of it!
