Wow time flies when you’re having fun. At least that’s what they say. It’s been a while since we have posted anything, so I figured I probably should. Since we were in Tucson, we moved easterly.
We had a stop in Deming New Mexico. It was intended as a stop to break up long driving days. The first night there we arrived just before “taco Tuesday”, a weekly event where all the folks from the RV park walk to the hotel next door and enjoy some tasty Tacos. Of course we were the only people with kids, but the group definitely made us feel welcome. It was an Escapee’s park, and we felt right at home. The next day we went and checked out City of Rocks State Park. It was pretty cool. Lots of rock formations that were formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. The kids loved it, lots of rocks to climb, and hide in. The weather wasn’t the greatest during our time there, but it wasn’t too bad.
From there we made our way to Alamogordo New Mexico. There we visited the International Space Museum and Hall of fame. It was cool, the kids got to learn about the early space program, and check out a lot of cool things. In addition, they got to dress up as astronauts. Be sure to check out our video on YouTube. Also while we were there (the main reason we went there) we went to White Sands National Park. If you haven’t been there, you definitely need to go. It’s awesome. The park is covered in white sane. It looked like snow! The RV Park we stayed at loaned us some sleds, and we went sledding. We had a blast! Again, check out the video on YouTube for some of that action.
From there we went further east to Roswell. Everyone knows about that place. We stayed at Bottomless Lakes State park, just east. It was pretty cool there. We got to do some paddle boarding! But during our time in Alamogordo some people came and looked at the Excursion, and made an offer. So our time in Roswell was spent locating a suitable minivan, and the next day (moving day) Brittany and myself drove the Excursion up to Albuquerque to the new owners. Overall we probably drove 700 miles those 2 days and didn’t go anywhere.
From Roswell we moved a short way south to Brantley Lake State Park. Although Brantley Lake could be fun, that wasn’t the reason we went there. This park was just a short 30 min drive to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. And OMG was that park awesome! Another, if you haven’t, you need to go.
Our time in New Mexico was definitely too short, and we will be back. Our next move was in the direction of Big Bend National Park, in south western Texas.
On the way we stopped for Fuel in Pecos, and unfortunately the truck didn’t want to start back up. I found a service truck in the parking lot of the truck stop we were in, and we were able to get the truck started again. But since Big Bend was a very remote area, we made the decision to head east. We stopped in Fort Stockton Texas. If we had known better, we should have probably gone somewhere else. It’s a small town, and not a lot of diesel mechanics available. We got a spot and spent the night, and the truck would not start. Doug’s cousin was with us as we had planned on spending the week at the national park. He helped tow the truck to a mechanic we found, and we made the best of a bad situation. Something weird happed while we were there, it got cold! Actually got into the teens. We can’t complain too much, most of the rest of the country was much colder. But we got out and played some disc golf, and took the kids the park, took a self-guided tour of Fort Stockton. We even found some pecan trees during our tour, and picked a bunch, and have been eating tasty pecan treats.
Anyhow, that’s what’s going on with us, the truck should be ready to go in a day or so, and we hope to be on our way.
